Plug & Play Communictions

Part of the Social Science Connected Logo
How does it work?

Getting appropriate communications support for research projects - especially those with smaller budgets and shorter lifespans - can be a struggle. Often it means struggling for the attention of a central communications team or shared capacity within a school or faculty, or spending months recruiting. Often those involved aren't specialists at communicating social science research.

Our solution couldn't be simpler. You tell us what you need, we give you a quote, if you're happy, we start when you do. If it's easier, we can discuss your needs when you're preparing a funding application and tailor a package that will meet your needs and suit your budget. If the bid is successful, your communications start when you want them to. If it's not, no worries - and no costs or strings attached.

Each package is bespoke but might include a logo and visual identity, website and associated social media tools, guidance on events management or public engagement activities, strategic communications support, drafting and issuing press releases.

We draw on many year experience of communicating social research in Scotland and around the UK. Generally we find that projects need an initial start-up phase and then a day or two's support each month over their lifecycle. But no two projects are quite the same.

"Over the past decade Nick has been an invaluable source of strategic comms advice for projects big and small. He is attentive to the detail of people’s individual research interests, has excellent media contacts, and an encyclopaedic knowledge of the wider media and legislative landscape in which researchers operate and he has been an incredible asset to each project."

Prof Ailsa Henderson,
University of Edinburgh

"Nick gets it. He understands the opportunities and pathologies of academia as well as the demands of those outside universities who are looking for evidence on which to base policies or news stories. He’s great at bridging between them. He’s also great fun. Work with him!"

Prof Richard Wyn Jones
Cardiff University
